Ils ont été les premiers à écrire un journal d'écrivain, avant d'être suivis par Jules Renard, Léon Bloy, Henri de Régnier, Gide, etc. Les deux frères sont allés jusqu'au bout d'une étonnante aventure : énoncer leur intériorité en décrivant des objets et des intérieurs de maison, faire des portraits de voix, en faisant cependant entendre leur propre voix, dire leur passion de l'art pour s'auto-représenter comme de parfaits hommes de lettres, se raconter en écrivant les Mémoires de la vie littéraire.
Pour suggérer la complexité d'une entreprise qui, jusqu'en 1870, fut duelle, nous avons pris le parti d'indiquer ce qui revient à l'un ou à l'autre des deux frères dans la rédaction du Journal. A la différence de Robert Ricatte, nous n'avons pas ajouté à la transcription du manuscrit des passages empruntés à l'édition du Journal parue du vivant d'Edmond. En faisant ressortir les biffures, en restituant aussi précisément que possible les parties raturées, nous avons pris le parti de la fidélité la plus stricte, tout en publiant en annexe l'édition Charpentier, parue de 1887 à 1896.
C'est la seule "intégrale" possible qui ne soit pas un monstre philologique. Chaque volume de cette édition contient un répertoire qui, en donnant des précisions sur les personnes, les personnages, les lieux de sociabilité, les périodiques mentionnés dans le Journal des Goncourt, prend l'aspect d'une petite encyclopédie de la vie culturelle sous le Second Empire et la Troisième République. Cette édition, abondamment et précisément annotée, n'aurait pu voir le jour, si elle n'avait été le fruit d'un travail collectif, mobilisant une équipe pluridisciplinaire recouvrant plusieurs champs du savoir :
